Tessera

A modern DICOM viewer for the desktop.

Most DICOM viewers are technically excellent and visually stuck in 2010. Tessera is built to feel like it was designed in the decade it ships in — fast, clean, and modality-aware. Free for research, on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Tessera DICOM viewer showing a CT abdomen study in multi-planar reconstruction — linked axial, coronal, and sagittal views with crosshairs and a series thumbnail rail.

Built for how images are actually read

A 2D radiograph, a CT stack, and a cine loop are different jobs. Tessera adapts to the study in front of you instead of forcing one workflow on all of them.

2D imaging done right

X-ray, mammography, and single-slice CT/MRI with fast fit-to-window rendering, pan/zoom, and interactive window/level.

CT & MRI stack navigation

Scroll through series with the wheel or arrow keys, multi-pane layouts, and standard window/level presets (bone, lung, brain, soft tissue).

Multi-planar reconstruction

Linked axial / coronal / sagittal views with crosshair navigation, plus oblique planes and slab projections (MIP / MinIP / average).

Cine playback

Smooth play/pause and frame stepping for ultrasound, echo, fluoroscopy, and angiography, with aggressive prefetch for lag-free review.

Measure & annotate

Distance and angle measurements plus text annotations that persist per slice — no DICOM wrangling required.

Cross-platform & fast

One native desktop app for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Launches in seconds and reads compressed DICOM out of the box.

Why we built it

Tessera started as a question — could we build a DICOM viewer that respected the user as much as the format? It's the same instinct behind everything at Cytogence: take a job that's powerful but painful, and make the software actually pleasant to use. It's also a straightforward demonstration of what our team ships — a polished, cross-platform native application, built and maintained by the engineering team behind Cytogence FCS and Atlas.
